That is a great idea the breeder has a camera on there! At this age, unless eating solids, I would ditch the water or use something more likely to stay clean because it can turn the crop into a real bacterial or fungal jungle if they drink fouled water and it sits for 5 or 6 hours as the crop...

    Baby Hemingway

How exciting! Will start flapping this week if he hasn't already. Should be weaned soon! Exciting! ♥ Adorable face on him!

Yes, greywing. SF - male. Sibling in the background also looks sf gw. GW really need protein in the growth phase, the feather structure naturally is weak, but a bump in protein can really help.

Its funny.... I find it always a case of trial and error, and with Linnies, something you do this year may work and not the next. You just have to be willing to roll with the punches. I keep my breeding pairs quite in their own, same species breeding room, but I know a lady that keeps her...

    Baby Hemingway

Adorable! It isn't a good idea to mix birds of different species and clutches in one brooder. Disease can be a concern (since few breeders disease test everything), and they also bring a new biome into contact with the other babies with really immature (and therefore weak) immune systems. The...

    Considerate Linnie Housing

Agree on acclimating. 10-15 degrees on a sunny day is not a swing to worry about. I don't keep my Linnies outside because they hung on the wire and pooped everywhere making a mess, but my Budgies and Cockatiels are out (as well as my 14 year old Lovebird) in 30+ degree temp swings, down to...

    What colors will babies be?

Sweet pics! The green is sf gw so doesn't need DNA. I would not bother to dna if yours look like the birds in the pics, the breeder was likely being honest if they bred while in their care. Some buy "proven" pairs and resell without proving themselves, those I am more suspect of. I would test...

    Baby Hemingway

Exciting news! It is nice when their are others in the clutch... really helps with the adventerous side of trying new foods. Ask the breeder to work with red, orange and yellow veggies most (highest in Vit A) as those are the ones you would focus on throughout life. A half a grape, pomegranate...

    Baby Hemingway

Adorable!!! Looks dark green or olive. Bit more feathers and we can tell for sure. Looks about 3 weeks here, and the parents plucked the rump, so I would pull this baby to hand feed at this point so they don't go after the pin feathers, as they can fail to thrive if they have to regrow a set...

    Welcoming Home Leafshine the Linnie

So glad it is going well! Sorry about the wing clip, good news is they will molt out. Bad news is with Linnies it takes FOREVER. One year generally you will see the first of clipped feathers fall out. They molt them out in random order, so just watch that a new blood feather doesn't get bumped...

    Cranky about her cage.

I am sorry for your loss. Louie because he was visual single factor greywing, he could only have been male. DNA not needed, but information about how to visually sex can be confusing or hard to find. I did post a few articles here trying to explain it easily for people. 8 isn't super old, but...

    Movie night at Toula’s

Ha! Pics were blurry but I was like "wait a minute! That looks violet!" Glad she is getting along so well. She is adorable! Does she let you rub her face? I ask as in one pic I see a few dark feathers around her mouth. It can be from another bird preening her, a human preener, or rubbing it on...

    What colors will babies be?

I have used every calcium out there, I don't like the Morning Bird one. Vetafarm Calcivet mixes better and has a taste they enjoy. The top picture of your pair, I see a lot of dark discoloration to the feathering which is usually a result of overpreening. The green greywing is over-clipped which...

Ha ha!! Is that a stainless straw in a YETI cup? Pretty bird! Looks cobalt.... have any more pics? Wondering if violet.

    Taming

If you wish to use them for a breeding pair, I wouldn't worry about stressing them or the family on trying to tame them. Building a rapport is important as I swear Linnies know when they are loved and cared for and breed best in those situations, but a bonded breeder pair is usually not going to...

    Considerate Linnie Housing

Any bird in good health is extremely hardy. Do you keep them outside? Where do you live? I keep our budgies and cockatiels outside from early April to mid-November in Massachusetts. When it is in the negative teens wind chill for multiple days I bring them in to set up for our only breeding time...
  17. Eddie's Aviary

    Cranky about her cage.

Is the bird in your profile picture the bird in question? I ask as it appears to be a single factor greywing which can only be male. Males are quite temperamental in teenage/sexual maturity time.

    Welcoming Home Leafshine the Linnie

How is it going? I was thinking about Leafshine and Luka and wondering how it was progressing. The bird in my avatar was my very first Linnie, named Leaf! A 4 year old had named him in his previous home. ♥

    Hi! I’m Luka

How is it going with Luka? Any progress? Been thinking about you guys!

    Vocalizations?

Ahhhh.... personally I haven't found a difference in the sexes for mutterings or words. To me it seems a Linnie (of either sex) is either into it, or not. Starting early really helps. This all said, my best Linnie talker of all time was male.
